30 Bloggers, 30 Days, $30,000

30 Bloggers, 30 Days, $30,000

I hope you are in a ready position, because you are about to get hit with the equivalent of a left hook from Mr. T.  What I am about to tell you is one of the most exciting things I have ever been a part of; higher than my first kiss with Beth Hunter when I was 14, and just behind the birth of my two kids and my wedding day.

I am joining together with a group of  influential bloggers (I sneaked in because I am friends with the organizer) who are trying to do something nearly impossible, and it will take all these bloggers and all their readers (that’s you!) to join together to make it happen.  I hope you will join me on this.  We can’t do it without you.

Here we go.

There are 4.3 million people who live in Central African Republic (C.A.R.).  An astonishing 90% of the people are unemployed.  64% of the population lives on less than $1/day, and 69% do not have a toilet.  1.5 million (34%) live without clean water, which leads to all kinds of disease and sickness, perpetuating the problems.  We can’t fix all these problems for all these people, but 30 bloggers, for 30 days, can raise $30,000. What is our $30,000 going to do?

provide clean water (and health and hope) to 1,500 people (300 families, 6 entire communities)!

Let’s do this! It is unthinkable that this many people have to drink nasty, dirty, disease-filled water everyday.  Let’s help!  We can, and we will.  Won’t you please join me?

We are partnering with charity: water to do this.  There are many organizations that do this sort of thing, so why did we choose charity: water?  Because they do it right.  They build great quality wells and 100% of the money donated goes towards water projects! They have donors who cover all of their overhead so that all of our donations go straight to the project.  Amazing.  Please head over to their site and get acquainted.  I’ll wait here.

Please watch this video to see who we will be helping.

So how can you get involved?  Here are 3 ways:

  1. Go to our group charity: water site (http://mycharitywater.org/30) and GIVE. (Please only donate through our group site so we can track how much money our specific project is making.)  Check this out, $20 provides clean water for one person for 20 years!
  2. SHARE it with your networks.  Virtual networks like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace (like anyone is still on MySpace), and personal networks like work, friends, school, small groups, church, etc.
  3. If you have one, BLOG about it.  Imagine the exponential potential of communicational activities-al… never mind, just write about it on your blog, or simply pump it up and send them to my blog.

We have 30 days to do this.  Let’s get clean water to 1500 people!

Road Trip Annoyances

Road Trip Annoyances

Like a long distance truck driver, I spent some time this summer behind the wheel of a big rig (actually it was a Honda Accord) on some road trips, and I noticed there are three things that really bother me about other drivers. Since I am the perfect driver*, I have decided to share my expertise with the world. Please, for the driving safety of the world, forward this blog post to everyone you know.

  1. It’s 2010, almost every car has cruise control. Please use it. Why are we playing leap frog on the interstate? I’m going 74 mph, but you’re going 65, then 80. It’s really annoying.
  2. You know who we hate most out there on the interstate? It’s you, Mr. Speed Limit Driver. We all appreciate that you want to obey the law, and that you are trying to be safe, but you are actually causing more problems with your adherence to the limit. Didn’t you learn in driving school that the speed limit is actually 5 miles over the posted speed limit? Everyone knows that.
  3. There are two times when you should tailgate – before a football game and when Mr Speed Limit Driver is in the fast lane. Other than that, stay off my butt.

What are some other things that the world of drivers needs to know?

*I would never make this claim for myself, but Susan has told me on several occasions that I am “such a perfect driver” when I was offering her some constructive criticism.

My Super Exciting September and October

My Super Exciting September and October

I’m more giddy than a night club bouncer right now because I have some really exciting things coming up in September and spilling into October.  Read these and be jealous:

  1. Sept 4. UNC vs LSU football game at the Georgia Dome.  College football season is here, and I get to kick it off by going to the Georgia Dome for the Chickfila Kickoff Game with 3 of my brother-in-laws to watch UNC destroy LSU.  I’m expecting all-you-can-eat spicy Chickfila sandwiches, and I will be purchasing some Dippin Dots while there, which also has me excited.  Dippin Dots really prove my manhood.
  2. Sept 5. Fantasy Football. The 2 best things about playing fantasy football are the draft (Sept 5 at 7:30 for me) and talking smack.  I never win fantasy leagues because I take too many chances and play against the odds.  I’m always waiting for that year when someone like Carlton Mitchell has a breakout season and puts me on top.
  3. Sept 18.  Sprint Triathlon. I am competing in my first (and only) sprint triathlon.  I have 2 goals: finish the race and don’t die.  I’m pretty sure that if I don’t accomplish number 2, number 1 ain’t going to happen.
  4. Sept 19-23. Trip with Susan to Las Vegas. We have never been, and never even really wanted to go, but her work is sending her out there for a conference.  I get to tag along for the price of airfare.  She will be in meetings all day while I will be gambling away our retirement and eating at the buffets.
  5. Oct 2-3.  Motorcycle Trip to Tail of the Dragon. I will be going with a group of guys to cheat death for a weekend riding on curves that multiple people die on every year.  My wife is really excited about this.
  6. Oct 7-8.  Catalyst Conference. One of the ways that I find encouragement and motivation to keep moving forward in ministry.
  7. Oct 12.  40th Birthday. What? It seems like I was only born yesterday because I distinctly remember pooping in my pants.  I’m pretty sure that my wife is getting me a 2011 Corvette, so I’m pretty pumped about that.
  8. Sept 1-30. Something Special for us to do together. I have something special that I will tell you about next week that has the potential to make you millions of dollars create something magical for us to be a part of.  I can’t wait to tell you about it.

Bucket List Update

Bucket List Update

Back in February I posted my “Bucket List” – a list of things I want to do before I die.  I have been thinking a lot about my list recently for many reasons:

  1. These things actually give me something to look forward to and work towards, and accomplishing them feels great.
  2. My personality pushes me to try something new, then move on.  I hate having to do the same things for a long time, so this enables me to work towards something, accomplish it, then move on to something else.  Keeps life exciting.
  3. It helps with me in my struggle with depression.
  4. Don Miller would be proud of the story it helps me to write for my life.
  5. It makes me sound cool and driven to tell people I have a bucket list.

Andy Stanley spoke this past Sunday at Buckhead Church (actually he was at North Point, but he is was live via video at Buckhead) about time.  He reminded us that we are only on this earth for a brief moment of time, and we need to think about how we are using that time.  It confirmed for me that I want to keep working on my bucket list.  I’ll be 40 in less than 2 months, and I have many things I want to accomplish before I die on July 24, 2043.

Here’s a little update on one that I have accomplished and 2 more that I currently working on:

  1. I finished P90X and Insanity.  I did them back-to-back with 2 friends.  Actually, Insanity was harder.  It was the most difficult workout I’ve ever done, including basketball conditioning in college.  (For those of you who didn’t know, I played small college basketball for Bryan College 86 years ago.)
  2. I am currently preparing for a sprint triathlon. I have about 3.5 weeks left (Sept 18, 2010).  It consists of a 400 meter swim, 12 mile bike ride, and 3.1 miles run.  I’ve been wanted to do this for a few years, but I knew that I needed someone to do it with, or I would quit when the training got tough.  My buddy, Adam Hilderbrandt, has come through for me.  He’s a good friend, and he’s slow like me in these long distance things.
  3. I am going to ride the “tail of the dragon.” A group of guys and I are going to conquer the dragon on Oct 2-3 on our motorcycles.  America’s number one motorcycle and sports car road, the dragon consists of 318 curves in 11 miles.

5 Things I Hate To Admit

5 Things I Hate To Admit

I think one of the reasons many people have a blog is because they want to portray to the rest of the world how amazing they are.  It’s called “personal branding.”  And I have to admit that I am sometimes motivated to post certain things because I think it will make you think more highly of me. But today, I refuse to go in that direction. Instead, i give you 5 things i hate to admit about myself.

  1. I suck at grilling – seriously, I can cook something on the grill and somehow it is less done after i cook it than before i started. It’s either that, or I bring back a hamburger that more closely resembles a charcoal brick.
  2. I cry during TV shows and movies – I am conditioned to start crying as soon as Ty yells, “Move that bus!”
  3. I can’t fix my car – growing up, i remember that my dad was amazing with cars. He would buy old cars and rebuild the engines. He never took our cars to the mechanic, he just fixed it himself. Well, it must not be genetic, because I can barely change a tire on a car. My dad used to try to teach me, but I couldn’t tell the difference between a lug nut and a spark plug.
  4. I have terrible long term memory - about 87% of the time, i can’t remember my middle name. I have a Master of Divinity degree and i forget how to define divinity. It stinks to be the master of something that you don’t even know what it is.
  5. I get way too excited about playing golf for someone who stinks so badly – if I were playing golf in the morning, i wouldn’t be able to sleep tonight. I get more excited about playing golf than i do about pay day. It’s terrible, because every time I play golf I tell myself that this is going to be the last time ever play (until the next time I have the chance to).

What do you hate to admit about yourself?
